It was good to
welcome Jo as my first woman chairmaker, and a very good one she
was too !
A word of caution though, this is a very challenging first project !!
Jo's words,
'I had one aim only
when I arrived at Hafren, and that was to make a Welsh stick back
armchair. I never even considered I might not be able to make one!
My scant carpentry experience until then was limited to putting up
shelves, and doing odd jobs around the garden, where mistakes in the
structure of home made wood stores are more forgiving!
However I was very challenged when faced with the different
kinds of powered machinery. Gerwyn is a good teacher, and
very patient! Under his instruction I gained both
experience and confidence in mastering some of the machines, but not all
of them. I was happiest, and probably at my best using the hand
tools, such as the spoke shave. Gerwyn did most of the final
assembly - with just a little bit of my help. The use of the jig
and the drill to make the pole holes in the seat and arms
completely defeated me! However, the chair was finally finished
and I am now the proud owner of a lovely chair"
